I'm wasting some of my gardening leave by being in at work today. Doing this has made me notice that I forgot to post my Jerusalem review, because I was too busy before I left to mention it - also too busy to write up Swan Lake, which I will have time to do today but may not have enough memory to manage.

Generally feeling glad about being back home but kinda feeling weird due to the "between jobs" thing.

I got my vacation info from work (how many days total I'll have, as it turns out 1.5 days less than I have now) and also was informed of how much "pro-rated" vacation I'll have for the rest of the year ...

and I did the math and it turns out there's really just no way in hell I can swing going to Australia this winter - it kind of relied on being able to take another 2 weeks vacation at the beginning of the year (which is when the Tango Foxtrot vacation days were reset), which I won't have - my total number of vacation days are through the end of March.

Ah well. Time to figure out what to do for Christmas.

In the meantime, it looks like my last "effective" day here will be Friday, and then I'll have three weeks to "kill" before the new job. I'm having fantasies about using some of this time to go to Scarborough again, and of course I'm out of the country next week (and in Penzance over the bank holiday weekend) ... but does anyone have some great ideas of what or whom I should see or do between now and August 30th?

I really find the medical questions intrusive.

They say it's to know if you have any conditions they need to accomodate but in fact to me it looks like a reason to avoid hiring you if you would cause too much "trouble."

In America, the baseline is that any disability you may have canNOT be an excuse for not hiring you, unless in cases of things like if you're blind you can't drive, obviously, and you have to be able to "lift 50 pounds regularly" if that's in your job description. But if you have a bad back or a heart condition, they can't turn you down from some desk job - they have to accomodate you.

I also find the requirement of disclosing what I would call psychological conditions very bad. Where is the right to privacy?

Of course, in the US if you had some kind of pre-existing medical condition your employer found out about, and it could raise their insurance premiums, they might try NOT to hire you, but keeping that an unknown is all part of the hiring process, that they must not ask about "underlying medical conditions" so as not to prejudice your application.

The thought that I might be turned down for a job because of having high blood pressure, and of having to disclose my prescription medications to my employer, which IN MY MIND is only between me and my doctor, really boils my blood.

This is just too good, I want the world to hear it (and I want to keep it because I can't be brilliant forever). A review of my second "end of day" report from the owner of Q***:

It's such a luxury that you can step in and take this project on, with no real chance for organized training or orientation, and still do such a great job.

Yep, quality in the midst of chaos, that's my signature! That's why I'm the Web Cowgirl!

Wow, I'm in an office with no AC. Sure will keep me hoping for a cool summer!

Melanie and Rachel walked over here to have lunch with me and new co-worker Deb at the Essential Baking Company. I got a turkey sandwich that came with mustard and pickles on rye bread. What a comedy! And of course Melanie knew Deb, and my new boss, and the woman that works here that was going to lunch as we returned.

I actually was pretending to be a confident regular employee within about half an hour of my arrival, when I greeted a software developer who was dropping off the product Deb and I were going to be testing and got to tell him, "Sure, looks great! We'll get right to work." And we did, and I seem to basically know what to do. But I do have work to do, so I'm off until tonight, when I'm going to see the Brown Derby version of the Exorcist at the Rebar. Join me, will you? I think we're going to have a drag queen starring in the Linda Blair role ...
