Cyrano is a great ballet

Last night we had a great night at Sadler's Wells watching Birmingham Royal Ballet's Cyrano. It was really just insanely fun - I mean, sword fights and a baguette dance in a bakery and even a full-on battle scene! The dancing was good and the dancers totally won me over with their acting - I got sniffly twice. Anyway, the link above is my full review, and if you're even the least bit interested, I've included a link for half priced tickets in the review.

Date: 2009-11-14 05:56 pm (UTC)Sokvannara Sar, the soloist in Mopey</>, was brilliant. I wish I'd liked the piece itself more. Again, this might have been a timing issue. The music switches from Bach to The Cramps and the interval felt too long to me. I'm sorry I missed the documentary about Sar at SIFF last spring.
The updated version of The Seasons was lovely. I liked the way Val Caniparoli riffed off the original. They ended with the West Side Story Suite, another strong ensemble piece. Choosing not to use the singers for the moment when Tony sees Maria was perfect. The minute the orchestra hit the first note of the song Maria, we all hear it in our heads, as he would.
As good as it was, I still came home and dialed up Rita Moreno and George Chakiris for a fix of the original heat and chemistry because when I hear America that's who is dancing it in my head.
