So I'm trying to decide against two different icons, taken from the "I'm Glad I'm a Boy/I'm Glad I'm a Girl" book (this illustration, about the least sexist one in the book). I like the idea of "Girls are Heroines!" But how best to express it?

(Full book is here for context, thanks to those who posted links to it.)

Is that a badly drawn knob in the second one?

It's a girl with a whip!

OK, now you say it, I can see it...

It's funny you posted this, because I was just randomly being annoyed this morning by the whole "princess" thing -- calling daughters, girlfriends, wives, etc "Princess." And I was going to go off on a tear -- and still might -- until I realized that there if I can "reclaim" words like bitch and even the dreaded "C word", then I suppose Princess isn't that big a deal.

But I don't know. It still feels wrong to me.

You know what's really different in the UK, it's the use of the C word. Here they use it as flippantly as they would say "dick" here. It's really shocking to me!

I personally like "princess," no one has ever called me that. I'm also a sucker for "Lady."

I do know that "fag" has been reclaimed by gay guys, or so Dan Savage has said.

I just think "Queen" would be better -- raise daughters to be queen, still deserving of special treatment and respect but also with an awareness of responsibility and duty. Princess recently began striking me as very "Paris Hilton."

Of course, I am also cranky from being stuck in bed, and taking a lot of vicodin. So take everything I am saying with a grain -- or possibly an entire bucket -- of salt.

I love the C word. My family used it all the time. I had no idea women were personally offended by it until I was a teenager. Now I am careful, in company, but among friends it's as likely to fly out of my mouth as any other word.

I'd lean towards a little more subversion, although the whip helps.

Hah! Nice icon! Though because I'm a cowgirl and she's driving a covered wagon, the Heroine Girl appeals to me a great deal.

Plus, as you can see, my image manipulation skills aren't all that great.

Yeah, that little heroine is a pretty awesome cowgirl. Do you want this one?

YES! That is so awesome. I will change it as soon as I get home. :-)
