That's one thing I like about Uplink (http://www.uplink.co.uk/). While you can save your progress so you can take a break and come back to pick up where you left off, if you botch things up your saved game is nuked so you have no option but to start again from scratch. Harsh? Sure. But it certainly makes the game more of a challenge. Top marks to the designers for doing it.

Huh. I don't normally think of myself as a game person; I love Nethack but little else. But apparently the one death thing makes me hardcore. [grin]

That's excellent. Thanks for reuniting me with James Wallis's writing. I had the privilege of accompanying him and [livejournal.com profile] mhw on a Pride march back in the early nineties, and he's as excellent a raconteur as he is a writer and game designer. Plus his being tall and gorgeous doesn't hurt.
