The train ride from hell
Jan. 21st, 2008 04:55 pmWell, we are 14 hours into the train ride from hell and I cannot tell you how much I'm looking forward to getting off this fucking train. I realized at the airport I'd made a critical tactical error in not booking a sleeper car for me and Mr. "not only can I not sleep on transport ever but now I need my lag elevated, too." Unfortunately I put in the request too late and we found out at five we were stuck on the other train. This was extra bad as after a day of being tough, J was aching badly.
So, our night. We weren't able to get on the train until 1030 (which sucked as we were both sleep depped and exhausted from the day), then ... next to the door, which slammed all night. #he smoking. The horror toliet. The lack of food ...

My life, in a few dozens of words.
Jan. 19th, 2008 12:45 amRightie. So I seemed to sleep today, lots. I found two other people who were blogging about Proust and was absurdly excited about this (okay, I was linked to one of them by someone I found on LJ, but hey, she TALKED ABOUT MY PROUST BLOGGING and that rocked my world). (I also found out that there's a book of pictures of turn of the century Paris by Eugene Atget, who rocks, with text by Proust, though sadly not written by him for the book. Whatever, A Vision of Paris, I will own you!) And I bought cold medicine (I ran out of the Benadryl Daytime or whatever it was called) and had my picture taken for my Egyptian visa. I didn't actually leave the house until after four. I was too fried to cook, again, so I asked
shadowdaddy to meet me at the Royal Court Chinese restaurant (almost right across from Putney station) for dinner. He took no convincing. We ordered light, only wanting just enough for the two of us and no leftovers. Which reminds me, crap, I need to put the Indian leftovers from Wednesday in the freezer. And then we came home and got ready for the trip. We are both worn out now.
Walking up to the street to the restaurant, I got homesick for going to Chinatown on a Saturday after we'd done a load of yardwork in the morning for a nice filling dim sum treat. Remembering the packed streets, the lines, the chaos, WAH.
So, who comments on my journal?
( Way too long to post without a cut! )
I will do photo posts while I'm on the trip (for my one fan, who is travelling with me). Remember, you can text me for free.

than coughing three times a night for an hour at a stretch. I slept right up until the cars woke me up, but I still resent losing the sleep, and there was much nose blowing once I realized I couldn't sleep any more.
Life is pretty good right now other than the moronic cold.
wechsler and
shadowdaddy both thought I was sounding better last night, even though I fell over at work with a THUMP at 4 PM. (I do mean metaphorically.) Making the world's easiest dinner (boil water, add pasta, wait five minutes) still just about killed me and I had to lay down on the couch for a bit after I ate. But there's hope.
Yeah, midwinter, the time of year that sucks the life out of you one way or another. I'm looking forward to enjoying some major sunshine this weekend ... and MUMMIES!
Time to load up on medication and get out the door. I wonder if I should start taking the water taxi in to work?

Stupid cold. Need a sleeping bag.
Jan. 7th, 2008 02:36 pmThe cold is getting to me and I'm feeling a bit weak and woozy. Just two and a half more hours! I took some more cold medicine half an hour ago, and I also changed from my sweater into a t-shirt I had for going to the gym - somehow I'd gotten overheated (the cold takes the blame again, I think) and the thin covering of wool seemed just a bit too much.
Also, I need a sleeping bag - well, two really - for our upcoming trip to Egypt. Can anyone lend us one? It doesn't need to be too thick, just enough to keep us comfy for two nights on a boat.
Cruelly, the sun disappeared just when I went for my walk, and was replaced by chilly rain. Talk about "discrete charm" - this English weather has quite worn out its welcome with me. Too bad I've got three more months of it yet.
